History is Imagination, the Novel is Reality

Borders and Boundaries in the Literature of Javier Cercas , Taobuk Award

Is limes a limit?

In collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in Italy

A chronicler of Spain and recent European history, Javier Cercas has crafted a literary voice that blends novel, essay, and historical memory. He approaches the conflict of identity as a literary act, challenging readers to engage with the complexities of historical legacy. As the author has stated, “literary imagination is the art of combining memories,” and Cercas succeeds in mediating and reconciling opposites. He blurs the line between truth and fiction, selecting fragments of history rooted in collective memory and reconstructing them into a fictional universe. He receives the Taobuk Award to honor the novel as a bridge between individual and history, present and memory, literature and reality.
