Confine/o – Water Lilies #1 by Ai Weiwei

Exhibition Opening

At the Threshold

Ai Weiwei presents for the first time in Italy his work Water Lilies #1, the largest piece he has ever created using LEGO bricks, based on Claude Monet’s masterpiece Water Lilies. A subversive, surprising, and incisive work, it turns the sublimity of Impressionism on its head through the use of industrial materials, echoing the artist’s enduring tension between the natural and the artificial, the handmade and the manufactured, construction and deconstruction. In the installation, the viewer stands at the threshold of contrasts—sometimes engaging with them, sometimes remaining outside. Weiwei adds a door to Monet’s painting: an opening that leads from the dreamlike to the brutally real—the Xinjiang province where the artist and his father were forcibly exiled during the 1960s. Confino/e, exile and boundary, and their reversal. If beauty leads to darkness, the reverse is also possible: the threshold walked back can return to beauty, in a dialogue that transforms division into continuity.
