The new US Administration has made it clear that Washington no longer wants to be the main guarantor of Europe’s security. Trump advocates for systemic change, bringing the world back to the spheres of influence of America, Russia, and China. Europe, in order not to remain marginal, must develop a common defense. Increasing defense spending beyond 2%, improving air defenses, developing common platforms, and ensuring a nuclear deterrent are urgent priorities. The EU’s €800 billion plan marks a shift, with Germany ready to invest. But who will lead European defense? How will it be funded? Should Europe rely on US technologies or create an independent industry? And what about NATO? The debate is open, with French nuclear power at the center of discussion.
