The American Lessons and the Boundaries Between Humanity and Technology

In collaboration with the University of Messina

“The human has no boundaries except those we impose.” — Italo Calvino

Software will triumph over hardware—so predicted Italo Calvino in his memo on Lightness. And in many ways, that prophecy has already been fulfilled before our eyes, with the advent of ChatGPT. Yet even artificial intelligence, we’re discovering, relies on infrastructure, regulation, and, paradoxically, gravity. This discussion explores the role of writing—from hieroglyphs to the introduction of vowels that enabled the rise of Greek philosophy—as both an exercise in thought and a lifeline in a world that increasingly seems to be moving beyond the written word.
