Eduardo Mendoza Garriga (Barcelona, January 11, 1943) is a Spanish writer considered one of the most important of his generation. A graduate in Law from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, he lived in New York from 1973 to 1982, working as an interpreter at the United Nations. He made his literary debut in 1975 with the novel La verità sul caso Savolta, which became a landmark work for post-Franco Spanish literature. His narrative style combines humor, colloquial language, and a lively observation of society. His most celebrated works include La città dei prodigi (1986), Nessuna notizia di Gurb (1990), and Riña de gatos. Madrid 1936 (winner of the 2010 Planeta Prize). In 2016, he received the Cervantes Prize, the highest honor in Spanish-language literature.
