Human life has always drawn boundaries. The function of a boundary is not only to define an identity—territorial, political, or psychological—but also to enable exchange between different identities. In our time, this second fundamental function of boundaries seems to have been suppressed. As a result, the boundary tragically comes to resemble a wall. It is a fundamental temptation of both individual and collective life.
