14. Grand Hotel Timeo

IL GRAND HOTEL TIMEO, OVVERO DI QUANDO TUTTO EBBE INIZIO.

«Era il 1850 quando il mio bisnonno Francesco La Floresta fondò il primo albergo di Taormina. Vendette un grosso agrumeto, acquistò un rudere a ridosso del teatro greco, lo ristrutturò e lo adattò a locanda. In quel locale ospitò i rari viandanti che decidevano di salire in groppa all’asino fino al paese. Per i taorminesi, a quel tempo pescatori e contadini, quell’investimento fu una follia tanto che il mio bisnonno fu soprannominato Don Cicciu ‘u pazzu».
Questa è la testimonianza di Franca La Floresta, riportata nel libro “L’antiquario di Greta Garbo” di Luciano Mirone, e ci trasporta verso quelli che furono gli esordi della tradizione turistica taorminese, cioè al lontano 1863 quando il Conte Otto Geleng, dalla lontana Prussia, arrivò a Taormina ed iniziò a dipingere ciò che si distendeva dinnanzi ai suoi occhi estasiati: l’Etna innevato al di là di una suggestiva barriera di mandorli in fiore. Con quelle pitture parteciperà ad una prestigiosa mostra parigina. In quell’occasione molti artisti negheranno che possa esistere un posto al mondo in cui i mandorli siano in fiore e contemporaneamente la neve abbondi sulle montagne.
Geleng li esortò a ritornare tutti insieme a Taormina, rassicurando gli amici pittori che, se avesse avuto torto, avrebbe pagato loro tutte le spese di viaggio.
Era la primavera del 1864 e, su indicazione di Geleng, Don Ciccio La Floresta predispose nella sua locanda la migliore accoglienza per questi ospiti illustri. Su suggerimento dello stesso Geleng, La Floresta scelse il nome di “Timeo”, come il figlio di Andromaco, il fondatore di Taormina nel IV sec. a.C. Taormina cominciava ad essere così una località turistica internazionale.
Nel 1880 arrivò in paese un altro prussiano, che presto si sarebbe guadagnato fama universale: il barone-fotografo Wilhelm Von Gloeden, amico dello stesso Otto Geleng.
I La Floresta in poco tempo riuscirono ad ingrandire l’albergo, dotandolo anche dei sontuosi giardini, già proprietà di Miss Trevelyan, una ricca inglese trasferitasi a Taormina. L’Hotel Timeo, insieme al San Domenico, diventò in breve il punto di riferimento dei grandi viaggiatori, degli artisti, dell’alta aristocrazia europea in viaggio a Taormina.
Arriveranno in questo luogo il principe russo Feliks Jusupov, gran consigliere della zarina Alessandra, noto per aver fatto assassinare il monaco e mistico Rasputin nel 1916, il Kaiser Guglielmo II, Richard Wagner, e, non ultimo, lo scrittore Andrè Gide, che, secondo Franca La Floresta, scoprì Taormina grazie ad Oscar Wilde, che gli aveva mostrato le fotografie di Von Gloeden acquistate a Taormina durante il suo soggiorno del 1897. Numerosi scrittori e premi Nobel per la letteratura furono ospiti del Timeo, tra questi Thomas Mann, Truman Capote, definito dai taorminesi “un cristianeddu” per la sua bassa statura, Edmondo De Amicis, Giovanni Verga, Luigi Pirandello, Salvatore Quasimodo, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Somerset Maugham, Leonardo Sciascia.
Il grande cinema ed i suoi “divi” di ogni tempo sono passati per le eleganti sale del Grand Hotel Timeo: durante la cerimonia di consegna dei premi cinematografici “David di Donatello” il gotha del cinema e del jet-set internazionale, da Liz Taylor e Richard Burton a Jacqueline Kennedy, partecipava qui ad esclusivi cocktail e si preparava per il cambio d’abito prima della consegna dei premi al Teatro Greco.

Oggi che il Grand Hotel Timeo ha orgogliosamente compiuto 140 anni, le parole che l’illustre storico dell’arte Bernard Berenson scrisse dalla terrazza del magnifico albergo, sono un’eco che va ben al di là degli anni trascorsi: «Una calma senza suoni, eccetto quello vasto e subito spento della grande distesa del mare… L’alba con la sua pura felicità visiva, con la sublime armonia e il solenne silenzio ch’io godetti… ».

THE GRAND HOTEL TIMEO, OR RATHER WHEREIT ALL BEGAN.

«It was 1850 when my great grandfather Francesco La Floresta opened the first hotel in Taormina. He sold a large orange orchard  and bought a derelict house next to the Greek theatre, he restored and changed it into an inn. Guests were the rare wanderers who decided to come up the mountain on donkeys to reach the town. For the people of Taormina, at that time fishermen and farmers, the investment was a crazy one, so much so that my great grandfather  gained the nickname Don Cicciu ‘u pazzu».
This is the account of Franca La Floresta, remembered in the book “L’antiquario di Greta Garbo” by Luciano Mirone, and he takes us back to those whom started the touristic traditions of Taormina. As far back as 1863 when Count Otto Geleng, from far away Prussia, arrived in Taormina and started painting what stretched out in front of his ecstatic eyes: Snow capped Etna beyond a suggestive barrier of almond trees in bloom. That picture would go on to be exhibited in a prestigious Parisian exhibition. On that occasion many artists denied that another place in the world could exist in which you can see almond trees in flower and snow on the mountains at the same time.
Geleng urged his painter friends to one day return all together to Taormina, promising them that if they returned with him, he would pay all of their travelling expenses.
In the spring of 1864 and, on the advice of Geleng, Don Ciccio La Floresta extended the best welcome in his inn for these illustrious guests. On the suggestion of the Geleng, La Floresta chose the name “Timeo”, like the son of  Andromaco, the founder of Taormina in the IV century BC. From there Taormina started to become an international tourist site.
In 1880 another Prussian arrived in town, one who would soon gain international fame: the baron photographer Wilhelm Von Gloeden, a friend of Otto Geleng.
La Floresta, in a short time managed to enlarge the hotel, giving it also sumptuous gardens, already  belonging to Miss Trevelyan, a rich English woman who had moved to Taormina. The Hotel Timeo, together with the San Domenico, soon became a reference point for the great travellers, artists, and of the high European aristocracy travelling to Taormina.
Fellow visitors to this place were the Russian prince Feliks Jusupov, advisor to the Empress Alessandra – famous for having had the monk and mystic Rasputin killed in 1916,  Kaiser Guglielmo II, Richard Wagner, and last but not least the writer Andrè Gide, who, according  to Franca La Floresta, discovered Taormina thanks to Oscar Wilde, who had showed him Von Gloeden’s photos bought in Taormina during his stay in 1897. Numerous writers and winners of the Nobel prize for literature have been guests at the Timeo, among these Thomas Mann, Truman Capote, who the locals called “un cristianeddu” because of his short height, Edmondo De Amicis, Giovanni Verga, Luigi Pirandello, Salvatore Quasimodo, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Somerset Maugham, Leonardo Sciascia.
Film stars from every epoch have passed through the elegant halls of the Grand Hotel Timeo: during the ceremony of  the “David di Donatello” film awards, the elite of cinema and international jet-set, from Liz Taylor to Richard Burton to Jacqueline Kennedy, participated here in the exclusive cocktails and prepared themselves to change clothes prior to the awards ceremony in the Greek theatre.

Today the Grand Hotel Timeo has proudly celebrated 140 years, the words that the noted art historian Bernard Berenson wrote from the terrace of the magnificent hotel, are an echo of what goes well beyond the years gone by: «A calm without sounds, except that vast and lifeless stretch of the sea… Dawn with its pure visual happiness, with the sublime harmony and the solemn silence that I delight in… ».

«Es war im Jahr 1850 als mein Urgroßvater Franceso La Floresta das erste Hotel in Taormina gründete. Er verkaufte einen großen Obstgarten, erwarb ein baufälliges Haus in der Nähe des griechischen Theaters, renovierte es und machte daraus ein Gasthaus. In diesem Gasthof fanden die wenigen Reisenden, die auf dem Rücken ihrer Esel in den Ort kamen, eine Übernachtungsmöglichkeit. Für die Einheimischen, damals überwiegend Fischer und Bauern, war diese Investition derart verrückt, dass mein Urgroßvater seine Unterkunft Don Cicciu ‘u pazzu nannte.»

Diese Zeilen von Franca La Floresta im Buch “L’antiquario di Greta Garbo” von Luciano Mirone führen uns zu den Anfängen des Tourismus in Taormina. Es geht zurück ins Jahr 1863 als der Graf Otto Geleng aus dem fernen Preußen nach Taormina kam um jene Landschaft zu malen, die sich seinen begeisterten Augen darbot: der schneebedeckte Ätna hinter einer malerischen Kulisse blühender Mandelbäume. Mit diesem Gemälde war er auf einer prestigeträchtigen Ausstellung in Paris vertreten. Damals bestritten viele Künstler, dass es auf der Welt einen Ort geben könnte an dem zeitgleich die Mandelbäume in Blüte standen und die Berge von Schnee bedeckt waren.

Geleng forderte sie auf, gemeinsam mit ihm nach Taormina zu kommen und versicherte seinen Malerfreunden, dass er ihnen die Reisespesen ersetzen würde, sollte er im Unrecht sein.

Es war Frühling 1864 und auf Empfehlung Gelengs, bereitete Don Ciccio La Floresta den illustren Gästen in seinem Gasthof einen überschwänglichen und freundlichen Empfang. Es war ebenfalls Geleng, der La Floresta vorschlug, für seine Unterkunft die Bezeichnung “Timeo” zu wählen; dies war der Name des Sohnes von Andromaco, dem Gründer von Taormina im 4. Jahrhundert v.Chr.. Taormina begann sich nun zu einem internationalen Urlaubsort zu entwickeln.

Im Jahr 1880 kam ein anderer Preuße im Sizilien an, der es bald zu Weltruhm brachte: der Fotograf Baron Wilhelm Von Gloeden, ein Freund von Otto Geleng.

Es gelang den La Floresta in kurzer Zeit das Hotel um die prächtigen Gärten aus dem Besitz von Miss Trevelyan, einer reichen Engländerin, die nach Taormina gezogen war, zu erweitern. Das Hotel Timeo wurde, ebenso wie das Hotel San Domenico, schnell zu einem Anziehungspunkt für Reisende, Künstler und europäische Adelige während ihres Aufenthalts in Taormina.

Hierher kam der russische Fürst Felix Jusupov, ein wichtiger Berater der Zarin Alexandra, bekannt für seinen Mord am Mönch und Mystiker Rasputin im Jahr 1916; ebenfalls zu Gast waren Kaiser Wilhelm II, Richard Wagner und nicht zu vergessen, der Schriftsteller Andrè Gide, der Franca La Floresta zufolge, Taormina durch Oscar Wilde entdeckt hatte, der ihm Von Gloedens Fotographien zeigte, die er während seines Aufenthalts im Jahr 1897 erworben hatte. Zahlreiche Schriftsteller und Literaturnobelpreisträger wohnten im Hotel Timeo, darunter Thomas Mann, Truman Capote, der von den Taorminern  aufgrund seines kleinen Wuchses “un cristianeddu” genannt wurde, Edmondo De Amicis, Giovanni Verga, Luigi Pirandello, Salvatore Quasimodo, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Somerset Maugham und Leonardo Sciascia. Das große Kino war hier zu Hause und die “Diven” jener Zeit sind durch die eleganten Räumlichkeiten des Grand Hotel Timeo geschritten. Zur Verleihung des Filmpreises “David di Donatello” war die Spitze des internationalen Films und Jet Set hier; von Liz Taylor und Richard Burton bis zu Jacqueline Kennedy, nahm man an exklusiven Cocktailpartys teil und kleidete sich vor der Preisverleihung im griechischen Theater hier um.

Nun ist das Grand Hotel Timeo stolze 140 Jahre alt und die Worte, die der Kunsthistoriker Bernard Berenson auf der Terrasse des prachtvollen Hotels geschrieben hat, klingen wie ein Echo vergangener Zeiten: «Es herrscht eine geräuschlose Ruhe, abgesehen von dem mächtigen, gedämpften Wogen des Meeres … der Sonnenaufgang ist ein Anblick reinen Glücks in Harmonie und feierlicher Stille … all das habe ich genossen … ».

«Шёл 1850 год, когда мой прадедушка Франческо Ла Флореста открыл первый отель в Таормине. Он продал огромный апельсиновый сад, купил руины вблизи Греческого театра, отреставрировал их и придал им жилой вид. Здесь будут гостить редкие странники, которые решатся подняться верхом на осле в самый конец города. Для таорминцев, в то время рыбаков и крестьян, эти инвестиции казались безумием настолько, что моего прадедушку прозвали Don Cicciu ‘u pazzu». Это свидетельство Франка Ла Флореста, изложенное в книге “L’antiquario di Greta Garbo” (Антиквар Греты Гарбо) Лучиано Мироне, переносит нас к тем, кто заложил зачатки традиций туризма в Таормине, то есть к далекому 1863 году, когда граф Отто Геленг приедет в Таормину из далекой Пруссии и начнет рисовать то, что предстало перед его ослепленным взглядом: заснеженную Этну позади яркой полосы из цветущего миндаля. С этими картинами он примет участие в престижной французской выставке. Увидев их многие художники будут отрицать возможность существования в мире места, где миндальные деревья цветут в то время, когда горы еще покрыты снегом.

Геленг призовет их всех вместе приехать в Таормину, заверив своих друзей-художников в том, что если он окажется не прав, то оплатит все расходы этого путешествия.

Это было весной 1864 года, и по совету Геленга  Дон Чиччо Ла Флореста предоставит лучшие места в своей гостинице этим почетным гостям. По предложению того же Геленга синьор Ла Флореста выберет название «Timeo» (Тимео), как звали сына Андромако, основателя Таормины в IV веке до н.э. Так Таормина стала превращаться в международный туристический курорт.

В 1880 году приедет еще один житель Пруссии, который вскоре получит всеобщую славу: барон-фотограф Вильгельм фон Глёден, друг того же Отто Геленга.

Семье Ла Флореста через некоторое время удастся расширить отель, добавив также роскошные сады, бывшие собственностью Мисс Тревельян, богатой англичанки, поселившейся в Таормине. Отель Тимео наряду с отелем Сан Доменико быстро станут местом для остановки великих путешественников, художников, европейских аристократов, совершающих вояж в Таормину.
