Residency for young artists
Created with the contribution of SIAE as part of the project “Sillumina – Copia privata per i giovani, per la cultura (Ed. 2017)”

CALL FOR YOUNG ARTISTS

The artist’s residency aims to tell the story behind the scenes of Taobuk, in order to provide a new and different image of the Festival, which goes beyond commercials or promotional and institutional initiatives. It is a tribute to the professionals who work to ensure festival success and who spend weeks working on a strong project of promotion and literary spread, in a cultural context as the Sicilian one, not always easy. And the best way to pay homage to literature and the figures who work around literary production is to support young talents, those who will be the protagonists of tomorrow in bookshops, schools and festivals in Italy.

The training course in which the artists in residency will participate is aimed not only at supporting them in the work of writing and production, although this is a specific goal of the residence, but also to enhance their knowledge and creative skills.

The residence will consist of two phases:

During the first period, from June 16th to 22th, the 4 writers will follow a training course accompanied by a tutor: they will have free access to all the venues of the festival, both those open to the public and those reserved for the organization, they will be able to speak with staff, participants, sponsors, to collect impressions and suggestions. They will have the opportunity to observe and report. They will refer to Casa Cuseni for their writing and study activities, but also to the other prestigious venues of the Festival: the Historical Archives, the Mazzullo Foundation – Palazzo dei Duchi di Santo Stefano, Palazzo Corvaja, to which they will have free access during the opening hours of the venues.

During the Taobuk days, writers in residency will be able to take part freely in interviews, debates and book presentations, while respecting their participation in training sessions.

The winners of the competition admitted to the residence will also follow free of charge the writing and literature workshop which will take place from the 22th to the 24th of June in Taormina and which is organized by Holden, the school of Storytelling & Performing Arts, founded in Turin in 1994 by Alessandro Baricco.

The course will be held from 10 am to 1 pm and from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm at Casa Cuseni, Italian National Monument and historical residency that in the past hosted Bertrand Russell, Tennessee Williams, David Herbert Lawrence, Ezra Pound and other famous artists. The two teachers who will carry out the course are Eleonora Lombardo, who in the mornings will deepen the technical use of “displacement” in writing, and Evelina Santangelo, who in the afternoons will take care of “In letteratura tutto è possibile” (Everything is possible in literature)

At the end of the Festival, Friday, June 29th, there will be a follow-up meeting to evaluate the results achieved in accordance with the goals set at the beginning.

At the end of the course a certificate of participation will be issued.
