Azar Nafisi

Iranian writer (b. Tehran 1955).

At the age of thirteen, she moved to England to pursue her studies; she then graduated in English and American Literature at the University of Oklahoma. After her return to Iran (1979), she obtained a professorship in English Literature at a University in Tehran, however, between 1981 and 1987 she was expelled from the faculty for breaking the dress code rules imposed by the newly founded Islamic Republic. In 1995, she was again expelled from Tehran University for refusing to wear the veil; two years later she left Iran and moved permanently to the United States before achieving notoriety with Reading Lolita in Tehran (2003). Her most recent novels include My uncle Napoleon (2006), Things I’ve been silent about (2008) and The Republic of imagination (2014).
